Your Financial Advisor: Financial Planning Isn’t Just for the Wealthy

Sponsored: In the debut of his Your Financial Advisor column, Opelika planner Tim Aja of AJA Financial argues that financial planning isn’t a reward for getting your finances in order — it’s how you get them in order, starting with Dave Ramsey’s Seven Baby Steps.

Editor’s note: This is the first installment of Your Financial Advisor, a new sponsored column from Opelika financial planner Tim Aja of AJA Financial.

One of the biggest misconceptions about financial planning is that it’s something you need to be wealthy to do. People often assume they should wait until they’ve paid off their debts, accumulated substantial savings, or reached a certain income before thinking about their financial future.

In reality, that’s a little like waiting until you’re in shape to start exercising. Financial planning isn’t the reward for getting your finances in order. It’s the process of getting them in order.

I’ve spent nearly a decade running my own financial advisory practice as a member of Dave Ramsey’s SmartVestor Network, which emphasizes approaching financial advice with the heart of a teacher.

That’s the same approach I hope to bring to this column: practical financial education that anyone can understand and put to use.

One of my core beliefs is that building wealth has far more to do with discipline and time than with where you came from or how much money your family has. I wish I could get in front of every high school student and explain the power of starting early. Even relatively modest investments, made consistently over decades, can grow into substantial retirement savings through compound growth.

But getting there requires a plan.

A budget vs. a plan

A budget tells your money where to go each month. A financial plan takes that concept further. It starts with your financial goals, identifies where you are today, and creates a roadmap to get from point A to point B.

That roadmap will look different for everyone. However, a starting framework I’ve found helpful for many people is Dave Ramsey’s Seven Baby Steps:

  1. Save $1,000 for a starter emergency fund.
  2. Pay off all debt except your mortgage.
  3. Fully fund an emergency fund covering three to six months of expenses.
  4. Invest 15% of household income toward retirement.
  5. Save for children’s college education.
  6. Pay off your mortgage early.
  7. Continue building wealth and give generously.

Why does this approach make sense? Because it addresses the fundamentals of financial security: preparing for emergencies, eliminating debt, protecting your income, and consistently investing for the future.

Your income is one of your greatest wealth-building tools. Every dollar going toward high-interest debt is a dollar stolen from your future. And money set aside for emergencies can help prevent life’s unexpected expenses from becoming long-term financial setbacks.

Just start

The important thing is to start. You don’t need a perfect income, a substantial investment account, or an elaborate financial strategy. You need to identify your destination, understand your starting point, and take that first step. It’s never too late to create a plan and begin following it. For most of us, the best time to start was in the past, but the next best time is today. Don’t wait any longer.

Over the coming months, we’ll break down financial planning into practical decisions you can apply to your own life.

Because financial planning isn’t just about having money. It’s about having a plan for your money.
