Corrections & Editorial Standards

Opelika Daily News is a local news aggregator and blog published from Opelika, Alabama by Jerry Katz. These are the rules the site runs on. If we fall short of them, tell us.

How we source stories

Most of what appears here is aggregated. We scan the region’s news sources daily, summarize what matters to Opelika in our own words, and link to the outlet that did the reporting so it gets the click it earned. We do not republish other people’s articles and we never present another outlet’s reporting as our own. Where a story is our own work — Katz Ramblings, From the Archives, event listings, the police report and similar original posts — it carries a byline and no source link, because there isn’t one.

How to request a correction

Email jerry@opelikadailynews.com with the headline of the post, the specific statement that is wrong, and the correct information. If you have documentation, send it. We read every correction request and respond.

How we handle errors

Factual errors are corrected promptly. When we change a published post for accuracy, we add a dated note at the bottom saying what was corrected — we don’t quietly edit and move on. Typos and broken links are fixed without a note. If an entire post is wrong, it comes down and the removal is explained.

When the error originated with the outlet we linked to, we correct our summary and, where it matters, say where the original account changed.

Crime, arrests and police reports

We publish summaries of the Opelika Police Department’s incident and arrest information. Names are omitted from those summaries. An arrest is not a conviction, and a police report reflects what officers alleged at the time, not what a court later found. Where charges are dropped or a case resolves differently, we will note it if we are told.

Opinion versus news

Katz Ramblings is opinion — observations, arguments and the occasional tangent, clearly the writer’s own view. News summaries are not opinion, and we keep the two visibly separate. Sponsored content and advertising are labeled as such and are never traded for coverage.

Artificial intelligence

An AI assistant helps with curation, formatting and behind-the-scenes upkeep. A human reads and approves everything published here, and a human is accountable for it. The full explanation is on our How We Use AI page.
