Starting Nov. 1, the State Revenue Department Will Collect Opelika’s Sales, Use, Rental and Lodging Taxes

Opelika businesses will file the city’s sales, use, rental and lodging taxes with the state starting next month. The Alabama Department of Revenue lists an “admin change” for the City of Opelika, effective Nov. 1, 2026, that makes ADOR the administrator of those taxes.

Taxpayers will file through the state’s My Alabama Taxes system, Bloomberg Tax reported, citing the department’s notice. The first state-administered Opelika return covers the period ending Nov. 30, 2026, and is due Dec. 21, 2026.

Until now, the city’s tax page has directed businesses to Revenue Discovery Systems (RDS), a private administrator, for these taxes. Businesses with questions about the switch should contact the city’s Revenue Department or ADOR. The change is separate from the proposed rental business-license tax now before the City Council.
