Opelika seniors can knock out a string of health screenings, a flu shot and a chair massage in one morning next month, when the Opelika SportsPlex and Aquatics Center hosts its 14th Annual Senior Health and Resource Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon. The fair is free and open to the public and is aimed at adults 55 and older and their caregivers.

The idea is one-stop shopping: healthcare providers, community organizations and local businesses under one roof, so seniors can get screened, ask questions and compare services without booking several appointments or driving around town. Attendees can also learn about supplemental insurance options and other local resources, according to Opelika Parks and Recreation.

“Healthy aging starts with having access to the right information and resources,” said Valeri White, adult activities coordinator at the Opelika SportsPlex. “This event gives seniors and their caregivers the opportunity to connect with trusted professionals, learn about services available in our community, and take proactive steps toward maintaining their health and independence.”

Free screenings and services

  • Southern Union State Community College Nursing Program: blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and hemoglobin screenings
  • Auburn University School of Nursing: students and faculty on hand to help explain screening results
  • East Alabama Medical Center Cancer Center: PSA blood tests for prostate cancer screening
  • Lions Club: vision screenings
  • Bubba’s Medicine Shop: flu shots
  • Lee-Russell Council of Governments: dementia screenings
  • Lee County Sheriff’s Office: sign-ups for the Yellow Dot Program
  • Better Bodies Massage: complimentary chair massages

Through the Yellow Dot Program, drivers get a yellow decal for their vehicle’s rear window and place critical medical information, such as medications and health conditions, in the glove box. If a driver is in a crash, the decal tells law enforcement and EMTs where to find that information.
