Residents of Auburn’s Cary Woods neighborhood are asking the city to move a planned outlet road for a new housing development so it doesn’t cut through the school zone in front of Cary Woods Elementary, WTVM reported. A petition started by resident Chad Cunningham had more than 600 signatures.
Cunningham, a teacher and father of seven whose children attend or will attend the school, said he isn’t trying to stop the development, only to route its traffic away from an area where many children walk and bike. “The single greatest multiplier is traffic volume,” he said. He has mapped an alternate outlet that avoids the school zone.
Several neighbors spoke at Tuesday’s Auburn City Council meeting. City leaders said the council doesn’t control the decision: the city manager said the matter falls under subdivision regulations that, under state law, are adopted and administered by the Planning Commission. Land for the development has already been cleared. Cunningham said there is no solution yet and he will keep pushing for one.
