Auburn sophomore safety Eric Winters has been named the Bronko Nagurski Trophy National Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America, and also picked up Lott IMPACT Trophy player of the week honors, for the tackle that decided the Tigers’ season opener.
With under 10 seconds left and Baylor going for two to tie, Winters stopped Bears tight end Matthew Klopfenstein inches short of the goal line to preserve a 17-16 Auburn win in the Aflac Kickoff in Atlanta.
It was one of 11 tackles on the day for Winters, who added two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in what amounted to a career game.
Auburn is 1-0 in Hugh Golesh’s first season and hosts Southern Miss on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
