Living in the Outer Bands

A Hurricane in the Southeast doesn’t always mean bad weather for us all.  Isaac has gone so far to the west of Alabama that our 75 degrees with winds from the Southeast at 8-15 mph are really pretty nice here in Opelika tonight. A few showers earlier, but nothing out there now!

Opelika City Election Results

It was pretty much a low turnout for Ward One and Two’s election today, but I think the vote count may have a story to tell.   Obviously, although both incumbents won the election, the margins were not so big this time. The big story was Larry Gray and Oscar Penn, with Penn another 20 votes would have won the election for him. This will probably be Gray’s last 4 years! Niffer’s coming to Opelika’s Downtown

This is pretty much know for those of us that call downtown our stomping ground, but should be pretty clear after seeing this car downtown supervising some of the work on the building that will house the Niffer’s on South Railroad Avenue between 9th & 10th Street.  Apparently after a review of options to add a new location in Tiger Town or downtown, the owners opted to build a client base of Opelika regulars downtown.  Work on the building… Read More

Heaven Forbid, Homemade Ice Cream? Really!

Please, Really! The State Farmers Market Authority decided to stop a local farmer from selling his home made peach and vanilla ice cream at the farmers market today. I had reported earlier in this story it was the Lee County Health Department, that was my error and I apologize for that.  The ice cream, which has been a local favorite for several years has disappeared from the Courthouse Square as of this week.   I’m sorry, I know I tend to be a bit liberal in my thinking… Read More
