Art Start to Holiday

It’s been fun to watch my friend down the street on Avenue D take his professional art career doing artist renderings of buildings and build to what his father has done for years.  This week, they both meet in Montogomery for a great art show. Here what the David Braly Gallery has to say about Iain and his dads show this week. There is a refreshing vitality in the Stewarts’ paintings: clarity of light and… Read More

Thanksgiving – That’s a Wrap

Ran into a few folks at Outback during their brief opening for the Thanksgiving Evening meal.  I suspect Stephen was pleased, as there seems to be a crowd the entire time.  I ran into some new friends with Opelika Ties, but from Savannah.  I’ll have another post to address that later.  That was Daryl (without this other brother Daryl), Mike and maybe Stacey from Florida, back for the weekend game.  It was off to Eighth… Read More

Only Three Days

What three days is Hal Smith’s Store closed during the year? Well, Thanksgiving is one, so I hope you got your beer for the day.  Some other openings and closings would be Outback Steakhouse, normally not open for the day, will be open from 5PM till 9PM.  I’ll let you know of others as I find out.  Oh Yea, Eight & Rail is Open Thanksgiving Night, but they always are! From the Archives — originally… Read More

Well, it’s here.  Thanksgiving weekend.  Work around town will slow in offices after lunch on Wednesday.  Folks in town for some turkey on Thursday, will escape to Eighth and Rail Thursday Night for Adam Hoods annual holiday return.  Adam is at the tavern on Saturday Night as well.  Crazy people, please don’t take offense, will get up and shop as early as 4AM at some area stores for Black Friday.  They will do that, even… Read More

Weekend Ramblings

I know for me to say how tired I was after working this week, having two days off on Monday and Tuesday, doesn’t make sense, but it’s true.  Camping did what it was intended to do, I became relaxed.  Back to work brought a few more projects than I would have liked, but what the heck.  It’s the weekend now.  Coffee and some eats at Red Door June this morning, a few drinks and chicken… Read More

Hay! Demopolis!

So if you drive north out of Demopolis , Alabama you’ll find some unique art in a field about 8 milesoutside of town.  I drove over to take some pictures of bails of hay that spoke no evil, heard no evil, and saw no evil.  A tinman towered above the hay to stand watch.  A sailboat, a few miles from the water, sailed on a sea of hay.  I found this on the web, “Jim… Read More

Foscue Campground – Demopolis, AL

Well, let me tell you.  If you want a great camping location, the Foscue has got to be it.  Now I was in site 49, which sits right along the Tom Bigby Waterway in Demopolis.  The best sites on the ground are 49, 50, 51 & 52 which are right on the waterway.  Lots of river traffic to see right from your fireside location.  Now the rest of the campground winds around the creeks on… Read More

Loopers Heading South Pass Demopolis

I was probably more familiar with the term “Snowbird”, but according to some folks we sat on the front porch with on Sunday, the regulars of the river call them loopers.  It could be because many make the trip down from Ohio and Tennessee to the Gulf of Mexico and then around Florida up the East Coast.  First light on the river this morning showed only a light mist hanging over the river.  Not the… Read More

Camping Trip Over? Not Yet!

If you live in Auburn and get on Higway 14 and head west, then keep driving until you almost run into Mississippi,  you’ll be at the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam Visitors Center.  It was a shorter trip up from Demopolis today.  The Visitor’s Center (unfortunately) is closed on Saturday and Sunday, but we parked and walked around the closed gate and wandered around for a few pictures.  If you’ve never seen a old paddle wheel “Snag… Read More
