Will The South (Railroad Avenue) Rise Again?

Empty buildings along South Railroad Avenue in Opelika, Alabama

It was April 2023 when part of the roof collapsed during heavy rains in downtown Opelika. No one was injured, as it was before opening.  It was about that time the owner of the building and other buildings on South Railroad Avenue died.  The estate took control of the property, everyone in those buildings was evicted and the property went to probate.  Now, the entire row of 7 or 8 store fronts has been purchased by a commercial development firm from Columbus.  No plans have been announced, but for what was paid for the property, It should be a teardown and build a similar styled project.  And please, don’t use the design of The Taylor Apartments (aka Kresty Prison) as a guide.
