The first full weekend of the school year is a busy one in Opelika and Auburn, with a downtown movie night, a two-day youth soccer tournament and a community theater run all on the calendar.
Friday, Aug. 7 — Food Truck Friday and Summer Movie Series. The Opelika Chamber’s Food Truck Friday runs from 5 to 9 p.m. along North Railroad Avenue and 1st Avenue with more than 20 food vendors and live music. This month’s Summer Movie Series feature, presented with the Opelika Public Library, is Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (PG, 105 minutes), with the showing beginning around 7 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8–9 — Opelika Crush Soccer Playdate. The Opelika Sportsplex soccer complex hosts the first of two August playdates, drawing teams from across Alabama and Georgia. The Sportsplex pool and splash pad are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for visiting families. A second playdate follows Aug. 15–16.
Saturday, Aug. 8 — RCB Cornhole Tournament at 704 N. Railroad Ave., beginning mid-afternoon in the Railroad Avenue district.
Through Aug. 16 — The Spitfire Grill. Auburn Area Community Theatre’s production runs at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center, 222 E. Drake Ave. in Auburn, with 7 p.m. performances Aug. 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 and 2 p.m. matinees Aug. 9 and 16.
Driving this weekend and Monday: Auburn City Schools students returned Friday, Aug. 7, and Opelika City Schools opened Aug. 6, so school-zone speed limits are back in force on their revised schedule. In Auburn, downtown parking is free from Monday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 14, during the break between Auburn University’s summer and fall semesters, and lane closures are expected on North Donahue Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9–17 as the widening project continues.
