University of Alabama System Schools Drop LGBTQ+ Language From Non-Discrimination Policies

August 4, 2026 — Tuscaloosa, AL

The University of Alabama, UAB and UAH have removed “sexual orientation,” “gender identity” and “gender expression” from their non-discrimination policies, the Alabama Reflector reports. UA’s equal opportunity policy site indicates the change was made in late November; the story was first reported by The Crimson White, UA’s student newspaper.

A university spokesperson said the policies will be applied the same way as before, arguing that discrimination “on the basis of ‘sex’ includes discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender status” and that the term sex “encompasses those protections.”
