President Donald Trump will hold a midterm campaign rally Friday, Oct. 2, at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center in Mobile, the Alabama Reflector reported. The event is set to begin at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 2 p.m.
The rally comes as Alabama Republicans have voiced concern about apathy among their own voters. Average turnout in August’s special congressional primaries was about 5%.
Jerry Carl, the Republican nominee in the 1st Congressional District, called the visit a “great honor.” His Democratic opponent, Clyde Jones Jr., told the Reflector turnout is a real concern but that Trump’s appearance likely won’t help. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, Trump’s pick for U.S. Senate, said the rally will “energize conservatives.”
Mobile sits next to the 2nd Congressional District, where the race between Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures and Republican Rhett Marques is considered more competitive.
