State Superintendent Says Districts Under Intervention Are Improving

August 14, 2026 — Montgomery, AL

Alabama State School Superintendent Eric Mackey told the state board of education Thursday that the three school systems under state intervention — Bessemer City, Dallas County and Sumter County — are showing improvement as the new school year begins.

All three districts were placed under intervention between 2023 and 2025 over financial and operational problems driven in part by falling enrollment and population. Mackey said Sumter County, under intervention the longest, is doing well following the opening of the county’s new school last month, but gave no indication of when any of the interventions would end.
