Report: Lee County Is Short More Than 2,100 Licensed Child Care Spaces

August 11, 2026 — Lee County, AL

Research conducted by Longleaf Strategies found that roughly 8,000 children under age 6 in Lee County have all available parents in the workforce, while the county has only 5,638 licensed child care spaces — a gap of more than 2,100 slots.

The figures were published in a community commentary in The Observer arguing that child care capacity is an economic development issue as much as a family one, and calling for a broader local conversation about how the county closes the gap.
