The Opelika Police Department is inviting neighbors to step inside the world of local law enforcement with its free Spring 2026 Citizens Police Academy, now open for registration. Designed as an eight-week, hands-on learning experience, the academy gives community members a closer look at how OPD works to keep Opelika safe.
Beginning Thursday, March 26, the class will meet weekly on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Participants will explore a variety of divisions, from administrative operations to specialized tactical units, while learning directly from officers and detectives.
Police Chief Johnathan Clifton says the academy is a chance to build stronger connections between residents and officers while providing honest insight into daily police work and challenges. Over the years, the program has grown in popularity, creating lasting relationships and more informed citizens.
Each week features a mix of classroom and hands-on activities, including:
- Mock traffic stops and impaired driving simulations
- Crime scene investigation and Vice & Narcotics overviews from detectives
- Live demonstrations with the K9 Unit and SWAT Team
- A turn in the APEX Officer virtual reality simulator, where participants face realistic, split-second decision-making scenarios
Registration closes Monday, March 9, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance during the week of March 16. Opelika residents interested in joining this spring’s Citizens Police Academy can learn more and apply online at the Opelika Police Department website: https://www.opelika-al.gov/230/Citizens-Police-Academy.
