Opelika Scouts Spend the Night Aboard the Battleship USS Alabama

OPELIKA — Members of Pack and Troop 858 of Opelika spent the night of Saturday, Sept. 12, living aboard the Battleship USS Alabama at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile.

Alongside the World War II battleship, the group toured the submarine USS Drum — eighth among all U.S. Navy submarines in enemy tonnage sunk — and the park’s aircraft pavilion, which houses more than 30 aircraft from World War II through Desert Storm, including a Tuskegee Airmen P-51D Mustang.

Leaders said the trip was meant to give the Scouts a firsthand sense of what military service has cost across generations. The 155-acre bayside park is dedicated to Alabamians who served in every branch of the military.

Details were contributed to the Opelika Observer by Pack and Troop 858.
