Opelika Residents Weigh Growth, Density at Zoning Ordinance Public Meeting

July 29, 2026 — Opelika, AL

Opelika residents raised concerns about development density, traffic, neighborhood compatibility, housing affordability, construction quality and short-term rentals during a July 29 public meeting on the city’s first comprehensive zoning ordinance rewrite since 1991.

The city began work on the overhaul in May as part of its broader Smart Growth Matters initiative and a development moratorium now in effect through April 2027. City officials said the updated ordinance is on schedule to be completed by February 2027, and that public input will continue to shape the process.
