Opelika Pulls Employee Clinic Contract After Questions About How the Vendor Was Chosen

OPELIKA — For the second consecutive meeting, an item came off the Opelika City Council’s agenda before it could be voted on. This time it was a proposed agreement with Symbol Health Solutions to run the city’s employee medical clinic once the current provider’s contract expires.

Council members delayed consideration after concerns were raised about the process used to select Symbol — specifically, whether local health care providers had been given a chance to compete for the work. The agreement is expected to return to the council at a later date.

The clinic serves city employees and is one of Opelika’s larger recurring service contracts. A day earlier, the council’s proposed rental licensing ordinance was also removed from the Sept. 15 agenda.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the city presented its August financial and building reports and recognized the Character Council’s citizen award during the mayor’s comments.
