Announced April 17; reported through April 23, 2026

The Opelika Fire Department received a $15,000 grant from the Mid South RC&D Council, an Alabama nonprofit, to purchase six Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) kits. The specialized equipment is designed to aid in rescuing firefighters who become injured, trapped, or in distress during emergency operations. Important items include emergency breathing bottles and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) face masks.

“These Rapid Intervention Team kits will help ensure our firefighters have the equipment they need to protect one another while serving our community,” said Fire Chief Shane Boyd.
