Opelika Council Revises School Zone Speed Limit Times Before First Day of Classes

August 4, 2026 — Opelika, AL

With Opelika City Schools opening for the 2026–27 year, the Opelika City Council suspended its rules at its Aug. 4 meeting to approve an ordinance amending Section 16-188 of the city code, updating school-zone speed limits and the hours they are enforced. Suspending the rules allowed the ordinance to be approved and published before the first day of school.

Under the revised ordinance, Opelika High School and Opelika Middle School zones run 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:55 to 4 p.m. — 25 mph at the high school, 20 mph at the middle school. The intermediate and primary school zones (Morris Avenue, Northside, West Forest, Carver, Jeter and Southview) run 6:45 to 8 a.m. and 2 to 3:15 p.m., at 20 or 25 mph depending on the school. The Opelika Learning Center is 20 mph from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:55 to 4 p.m., and Fox Run School is 25 mph from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 2 to 3:15 p.m.

The council also approved downtown street closures for the Workout Anytime Family Field Day (Oct. 3), the annual On The Tracks event (Oct. 9) and the Railyard Concert and Villain’s Ball (Oct. 31), along with a nearly $560,000 bid to Pac-Tech Manufacturing for two automated side-loading garbage trucks for Opelika Environmental Services. Public hearings were held on six weed-abatement assessments.

The full ordinance text, including the exact street segments in each zone, is published in the Observer’s public notices for the week of Aug. 6. The Observer’s meeting report has the complete rundown — read it there.
