New on the site: a Markets page for rates, stocks and crypto — with a Lee County angle

A new Markets page collects mortgage rates, Treasury yields, the fed funds rate, crypto prices and a live ticker in one place — plus a watchlist of the publicly traded companies with real skin in Lee County, and a look at who owns Opelika’s biggest plants.

There is a new page on the Opelika Daily News, and it is built around a simple idea: the financial numbers that actually change what things cost around here deserve a permanent home.

Markets — now in the main menu, between Obituaries and Archives — puts the day’s mortgage rates, Treasury yields, the federal funds rate, crypto prices and a live stock ticker on one page.

What you’ll find there

A live ticker. Across the top, the S&P 500, the Dow, the Nasdaq 100, AuburnBank, Regions and bitcoin, updating on their own.

Interest rates that matter to a household budget. The 30- and 15-year fixed mortgage averages, straight from Freddie Mac’s weekly survey. The fed funds rate, which sits underneath what your savings account and your credit card do next. And the Treasury yields — three-month through 30-year — that lenders watch before they set anything else. Every line carries the date it was published and the agency it came from, so you always know how fresh the number is instead of guessing.

Crypto, for readers who follow it: bitcoin, ether and solana, with the 24-hour move.

And the part we think is genuinely local. A watchlist of the publicly traded companies with real skin in Lee County. AuburnBank’s parent, Auburn National Bancorporation, is the only public company headquartered in this county — founded in 1907 and still here. West Fraser runs a mill in Opelika. GE Aerospace builds jet engine parts in Auburn. Donaldson has an Auburn plant. Walmart’s Opelika distribution center is one of the largest single employers in town. Add the Alabama-based names people here hold in a retirement account — Regions, Vulcan Materials,  Encompass Health, Construction Partners — and you have a board that tells you something about this place, not just about Wall Street.

Below it, a second table answers a question we hear often: who actually owns these plants? Several of Opelika’s biggest manufacturing employers are the American arm of a company listed overseas. Pharmavite, which makes Nature Made vitamins in Opelika, belongs to Otsuka Pharmaceutical of Tokyo. HL Mando and Hanwha Advanced Materials answer to parents in Seoul, as do Daewon, Yongsan and KOAM. Their stock doesn’t show up on an American ticker, but their payroll shows up in Opelika.

One thing the page is not: advice. It is information, published with its sources named. Nothing on it is a recommendation to buy or sell anything, the ticker’s prices can run a few minutes behind, and anything you intend to act on is worth a conversation with your own bank, lender or financial adviser. The rate and price tables refresh each weekday morning.

While we’re at it: two additions to the sidebar

If you haven’t scrolled past them yet — the right-hand column now carries Opelika weather, refreshed through the day with the current conditions, the high and low and tomorrow’s outlook, and today’s best gas prices in town, including diesel, updated morning and afternoon. Same principle as the Markets page: small numbers you’d otherwise go hunting for, kept where you already are.

Tell us what belongs on the Markets page that isn’t there yet. If there’s a local company you watch, or a rate you check every week, send word and we’ll look at adding it.
