A new inclusive playground at West Ridge Park opens to the public Thursday, Aug. 20, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. followed by free play for everyone who attends.
The playground is designed to serve children of all abilities. It includes two large play pods, four additional play structures, a triple-bay swing set and multiple shade structures throughout the area.
Inclusive playgrounds go beyond basic accessibility requirements. Features such as tactile panels, wide slides, adaptive swings and wheelchair-accessible ramps are meant to support physical, sensory and social play so children with and without disabilities can play side by side.
The project follows last year’s inclusive playground opening at Floral Park, and is part of a broader $2.3 million renovation at West Ridge Park. That work also covers new surfacing and fencing for the Miracle League field, park-wide fencing replacement, restroom and press box renovations, field upgrades, new scoreboards and lighting, shaded bleacher areas, park benches and picnic amenities, irrigation improvements and landscaping.
