New Alabama Law Will Put Voting-Rights Restoration Status Online by March 1

September 25, 2026 — Montgomery, AL

A new state law, Senate Bill 24, is meant to make it easier for Alabamians with past convictions to get their voting rights back, WSFA reported. The bill drew support from both parties in the 2026 legislative session.

Under the law, the Board of Pardons and Paroles must build a website explaining how people can restore their voter registration after a conviction. Users will be able to look up their own status with their Alabama Institutional Serial (AIS) number, and the board has until March 1, 2027, to publish its list of people who qualify.

“Restoring the right to vote is a powerful piece of successful reentry,” said Aylia McKee-Stovall, chief public defender for Montgomery County, who said the law will clear up confusion in the current process.
