I knew this would be a big night at City Council and due to some other obligations I was unable to attend. However, Mayor Fuller did leave a comment on the earlier post about the night, so I thought I’d bring that post forward as a new post to make sure you saw what he had to say.
We had a big, almost capicity, crowd attend the Council meeting tonight. Most were there for the Charter public hearing. A number of citizens voiced their opinion regarding Charter’s customer service as well as the prices we all have to pay. As you would imagine the comments, for the most part, were negative. President Eddie Smith allowed everyone to speak that wanted to. Several expressed a desire for someone to compete with Charter. As you know we had a feasibility study performed several months ago which supports my position that the only way we will have a competing provider is for the City to become a player. This will require a substanial investment and I’m prepared in the coming weeks to recommend to the Council we move toward providing this service to our citizens.
I’m excited about the plans Lisa and Chris Beck have for the former Coca Cola plant on North Railroad Avenue. Their Event Center, in my opinion, will be a very big success!
Please note that we recognized Bobby Huling and Miles Thomas for their service to the City. Bobby served as a City Commissioner and now serves on the Opelika Housing Authority Board. Miles was a Commissioner and then served on the Council as President when we changed the form of government. Both of these good men contributed to the success we’re enjoying today. ~ Mayor Gary Fuller
