I thought I’d post this again for the event Monday at 11AM at the Performance Arts Center at Opelika High School.
The City of Opelika and The Dream Day Foundation will present the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Day Program for Lee County on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Opelika Performing Arts Center. The program will begin at 11:00 a.m.
“This year’s program will be special in many ways,” states Marion Sankey, the event coordinator. “It is the 10th anniversary for this Observance Day Program; and it will be followed by the historic inauguration of our first African American President, Barack Obama.”
Approximately 100 young people from throughout Lee County have been working very hard to present an exciting program that will honor Dr. King who paved the way for this historical day. The program will also recognize the recipient of the 2009 “Dream Achiever” Award.
In addition to presenting the Observance Day Program, a souvenir book, featuring past recipients of the “Dream Achiever” Award, is being produced. A “MLK Observance Day Museum” will be on display at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church during the month of January.
The observance day event, which is free to the public, was moved from Greater Peace Missionary Church to the Opelika Performing Arts Center in an effort to accommodate as many people as possible. “We are expecting record attendance,” says Mrs. Sankey. “This is “A Day On! Not a Day Off.”, Mrs. Sankey reminds us. Event sponsors include Allstate Insurance Company, Harris Funeral Home and BNB Associates. (Source: City of Opelika Website)
