The City of Opelika has named Mark Ennis, P.E., director of Opelika Power Services, bringing back a utility veteran who started there as a young engineer nearly 40 years ago.
Ennis succeeds Brent Poteet, who retired after 10 years with the city-owned electric utility, the city said. Ennis joined Opelika Power Services as an engineer in 1986, worked his way up and served as its director for eight years before leaving in 1997. Since then he has been general manager of the Water, Light and Gas Commission in Monroe, Ga., general manager of the Utilities Board of the City of Tuskegee and, most recently, vice president of compliance and distribution services for Energy Southeast.
“Having someone with his experience return to the organization where he began his career is a tremendous asset for Opelika Power Services and our citizens,” Mayor Eddie Smith said. “We are excited to welcome Mark home.”
“Coming back to Opelika Power Services feels like coming home,” Ennis said. “This is where I learned what it means to serve a community, not just a utility.”
Ennis holds an electrical engineering degree from Auburn University and an MBA from Columbus State University, and is a licensed professional engineer in Alabama and several other Southeastern states. He and his wife, Robin, live in Opelika.
