Lee County Supporters Launch a Write-In Campaign for Sheriff Jay Jones

Some Lee County voters are organizing a grassroots campaign to write in Sheriff Jay Jones on the November ballot, months after he lost the Republican primary to Cam Hunt, NowGeorgia.com reported.

Hunt, a former Marine and former Lee County deputy, beat Jones by 307 votes in May. There is no Democratic candidate, so Hunt’s is the only name on the general election ballot for sheriff. Former deputy Jack Carter has been urging voters on Facebook to write in Jones, and supporters have made signs telling people how to do it.

Jones, who has been sheriff since 1998, told the outlet he knew about the effort. “If people wish to organize for a write in candidacy, I’m very humbled they would feel that way,” he said. He noted that every voter, not just Republican primary voters, gets a say in November. He did not say he was running a campaign himself.

Hunt said in a statement that anyone is free to organize a write-in effort. “The voters who participated in the Republican primary made their voices heard in May as well, and they selected me as the Republican nominee for Sheriff,” he said. “I respect the process and the decision voters will make in November.”

The race has been bitter from the start. Jones fired Hunt in October 2025 after Hunt said he would run against him. This month, Hunt filed an ethics complaint alleging the sheriff’s office used vehicle-tracking technology around his home.
