Lee County Sheriff-Elect Files Ethics Complaint Over Alleged GPS ‘Geofence’ Around His Home

September 13, 2026 — Lee County, AL

Lee County Sheriff-elect Cam Hunt has called for an investigation into claims that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office used taxpayer-funded vehicle tracking technology for political purposes during the 2025–2026 sheriff’s race.

Hunt filed a complaint with the Alabama Ethics Commission in June alleging that someone in the office created a GPS “geofence” around his private residence while he was running against incumbent Sheriff Jay Jones. According to information provided to Hunt, the geofence was allegedly used to identify which Sheriff’s Office vehicles entered the area around his home.

Hunt, who won the race and is set to take office, said publicly last week that the allegations should be reviewed by an outside authority.
