Lee County Leaders Urge Caution as Back-to-School Traffic Returns

Law enforcement and school officials across Lee County are asking drivers and pedestrians to slow down and pay closer attention this month as classes resume and traffic patterns shift back to school-year rhythms.

Opelika City Schools students returned Aug. 6 and Auburn City Schools opened Friday, Aug. 7. Auburn University’s fall semester begins Aug. 17, which will add campus and commuter traffic to the mix the following week.

The Opelika City Council approved revised school-zone speed limit times at its Aug. 4 meeting so the updated enforcement hours would be published before the first day of classes — for example, Fox Run School’s zone is 25 mph from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 2 to 3:15 p.m.

Officials are urging motorists to watch for buses and students in crosswalks, avoid phone use in school zones, and build extra time into morning and afternoon commutes.
