May 15–18, 2026

Law enforcement officials, community members, elected leaders, and families of fallen officers gathered Friday, May 15, at the Opelika Public Library for the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service, held in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Hosted by the Opelika Police Department, the ceremony was opened by Police Chief Johnathan Clifton, who told the crowd: “We are gathered here today for a purpose that transcends our daily duties. We’ve come together to remember and to pay a debt of gratitude to those who ultimately gave their lives in service to their community.” Clifton noted the presence of elected officials, judges, mayors, council members, and county commissioners from across the area.

The National Anthem was performed by Opelika High School student Hudson Owen. Chaplain Mack Ballard delivered the invocation. During the service, Clifton recognized the families of fallen officers in attendance, including honoring Chief Henry Dlimus Hart and other Opelika officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
