The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has honored seven of its employees, plus one from the Lee County Probate Office, at an awards ceremony, the Opelika Observer reports. Most of the awards stem from an April 15 warrant service on Lee Road 188 that turned into a gunfight.
Investigators went to the home to arrest a suspect in a rape and kidnapping case first reported to a school resource officer. When Investigator Matt Parks breached an interior bedroom, the suspect opened fire with an AK-style rifle; Parks returned fire at close range and stopped the threat, and a child in the home was brought to safety. Investigator Matt Sheets, positioned behind Parks, was shot in the right arm. Colleagues applied two tourniquets and rushed him to the emergency room with dispatch holding intersections along the route.
Parks received the Medal of Valor, the agency’s highest award for a living officer, and Sheets received the Sheriff’s Star for being wounded in the line of duty. Investigator Shawn McDevitt, Cpl. Stanley Wilson, Sgt. Dylan Pugh and Sgt. Ben Causland received the Sheriff’s Distinguished Medal; Causland, who took command of the scene, also earned the Meritorious Service Award. “These award recipients represent the very best of their profession,” Sheriff Jay Jones said.
