MONTGOMERY — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones said Wednesday that if elected he will work with the Legislature on a constitutional amendment to reorganize part of state government, starting with the office of lieutenant governor.
Jones, a former U.S. senator, appeared at the State Capitol with Rep. Phillip Ensler, the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor. The pair want the office pulled into the executive branch with a defined administrative role, rather than the largely ceremonial Senate-presiding post it became after lawmakers stripped its powers in 1999.
Jones said the specifics — including whether governor and lieutenant governor would run on a joint ticket — would be worked out with lawmakers after the election. Any change would require voter approval of a constitutional amendment.
Republican nominees Tommy Tuberville and John Wahl had not responded to requests for comment as of Wednesday afternoon, al.com reported. Election Day is Nov. 3.
