Friends of the Preserve is hosting a casual fall nature walk at Opelika’s Wood Duck Nature Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 3, and everyone is invited, according to an announcement in The Observer.

Coffee and refreshments start at 7:30 a.m. at the pavilion, 3601 Waverly Parkway, about half a mile from the Birmingham Highway/U.S. 280 intersection. The walk starts at 8 a.m. and covers about 2 miles, with stops at two viewing blinds for ducks and other waterfowl. People can leave at any point, and a few loaner binoculars will be on hand. Birders of every level are welcome.

The organizers are hoping to spot migrating warblers. The preserve has averaged about 30 warbler species each fall for the past three years. They also expect migrating butterflies, especially monarchs and cloudless sulphurs, in the pollinator garden. Wood Duck is site No. 10 on the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail.
