OPELIKA — Opelika police arrested four people on organized retail theft charges Sunday, Sept. 13, after two separate incidents hours apart at the Target store at 2640 Enterprise Drive.
Officers were called to the store about 2:40 p.m. on a report of two people trying to leave with shopping carts full of home appliances. Target asset protection staff stopped Priscilla Lynne Denton, 44, of Montgomery, inside the store, while responding officers detained Eric Wayne Giles, 35, of Tallassee, outside. Both were taken to the Lee County Jail and charged with organized retail theft.
About 8:14 p.m., officers returned to the same store after asset protection reported two people concealing merchandise in the jewelry department. Police said Jerry Clyde Edwards, 18, of Salem, was seen removing security tags from merchandise before Savannah Faith Amber Wilson, 18, also of Salem, put the items in her purse. Store staff intercepted the pair after they passed the point of sale, and both were booked into the Lee County Jail on organized retail theft charges.
Organized retail theft is a felony in Alabama, covering coordinated efforts to steal merchandise for resale rather than personal use. Charges filed by police are accusations, and all four are presumed innocent unless convicted.
