Flag Day – Saturday June 14th

9815196_sIt will be one of those pictures from a movie on Saturday in Downtown Opelika. Kids excited to be able to climb on and get their picture taken near or in the big trucks and other vehicles that make it to “Touch-A-Truck”. The event is moving back to downtown after a brief time away at the airport last year. Add to all the trucks, you can count on a train going by and the conductor giving an extra pull on the horn as kids wave.

You’ll also notice that the American Flags are out lining the streets and courthouse square for Flag Day. I think it’s pretty cool and hope that some parents explain why the flags are there. “People across the United States celebrate Flag Day on June 14 each year to honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag’s adoption. On the same day, the United States Army celebrates its birthday. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes – one for each state.” You can find more information about the holiday here! Hey, it’s a great time to get a picture of the kids by a flag! Enjoy the day! (Photo Copyright: xtremer / 123RF Stock Photo)
