OPELIKA β Continental Properties has broken ground on Springs at Opelika, a 252-home apartment community at Gateway Drive and Capps Drive, bringing the Wisconsin-based developer’s flagship Springs Apartments brand to the Auburn-Opelika metro for the first time.
The community will offer studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans with private ground-level entrances and attached garage options, according to the developer. It sits next to new retail and The Landings, a planned mixed-use development expected to include hotel, retail and grocery-anchored space along the Gateway Drive corridor.
“Opelika’s expanding employment base and steady job growth are creating demand for more housing choices across the area,” said Marc McLaughlin, development director at Continental Properties, who pointed to the region’s mix of higher education, health care and advanced manufacturing employers β among them Auburn University, East Alabama Medical Center, Miele, Hanwha, Daewon and Niagara Bottling.
The project lands as housing supply and affordability remain live issues across Lee County, where Auburn officials have spent much of the summer fielding complaints about apartment redevelopments displacing longtime tenants.
