Christmas Time in Opelika, Alabama

Velinda from Opelika Main Street sent along this letter about upcoming events! Christmas In A Railroad Town is Friday, December 12th from 6-9pm.  Our entertainment for the evening is sure to please. Make Your Move Dance Studio will get the evening started, followed by the Opelika High School Ovations and Impressions at 7pm. The Queen’s Carolers from Columbus, Georgia will take stage at 8pm. Let them take you back in time for an authentic Old-English Christmas tradition – one similar to what Charles Dickens might have enjoyed. Although you won’t find Ebenezer Scrooge lurking about, you will find the sights and sounds typical of his day. Delight in the warmth of a Victorian Christmas as age-old songs are sung acappella by carolers dressed in period costumes and listen in wonder to short tales masterfully told through the art of storytelling. This unique performance will add an air of enchantment to the evening.

For the creative souls we offer an opportunity for you or your children to create a gingerbread house and display in our Gingerbread House village. This is open to all ages. Go to opelikamainstreet.org for contest rules. You may drop off your gingerbread house to the Eighth Street Market Thursday, December 11th 3-5pm or Friday, December 12th 1-4pm.

Also held within the Eighth Street Market alongside the Gingerbread House contest and Children’s Village will be our Main Street Bake Sale. We are inviting you to bake your best cookies, cakes, pies and breads for our bake sale. Your goodies will surely to be a hit amongst the locals and visitors for the evening. Without your support, the bake sale will not take place, so we encourage your participation. We will price each of the items for you. Baked goods may be dropped off at the Eighth Street Market Thursday, December 11th from 3-5pm and Friday, December 12th from 1-4pm. Please contact Bake Sale Chairman, Barbara Patton at 705-0484 if you have any questions.

During the evening wagon and trolley ride will be available to take you through the Victorian Porch Tour and as in years past board the Rocky Top Railroad for a trip through downtown. The Opelika Post Office will be located inside the Museum of East Alabama for the evening hand stamping your Christmas Cards with a special Christmas In A Railroad Town stamp. All our shops will be open offering complimentary gift-wrap for your unique one-of-a-kind gifts. During the evening enjoy dinner with family and friends at your favorite downtown restaurant. Before you end the evening make sure you take time to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus to let them know of your Christmas wishes.

Thank you for your continued support of Opelika Main Street and the downtown businesses. Please remember to shop them first for your Christmas and holiday gifts.
