I was looking back to see when ground broke on this complex. It was April 2007 and now 21 months later the dream has become reality. The Billy Hitchcock Miracle Field is located at West Ridge Park facilities, located at 1600 Covington Avenue, in Opelika (Field #8). This project was definitely a community effort, with much of the work and supplies being given from generous private donors. The complex will serve communities in West Georgia and East Alabama (with more than 25,000 kids with disabilities in the “service area”) and will be the largest facilities of this type in the country! The field has an adjoining playground and family park and picnic area, which accommodates people with disabilities. Ribbon cutting is this Thursday at 4PM.
The Mayor had this to say in a note to the Opelika Daily News this afternoon. “Our Miracle Field ribbon cutting this Thursday is a major event…but, of course, the “news” story is the fact that this world class facility is completed and ready for play. I can only imagine the impact that is going to have on special needs children and their families! No question this is the largest and finest in the United States…maybe the world…and it’s right here in Opelika. Best of all it will serve children in East Alabama and West Georgia. I believe this is worthy of your attendance and coverage. Many, many people worked very hard to make this happen. I hope to see you Thursday afternoon at the Miracle Field.” ~ Mayor Gary Fuller
