Auburn Restaurant Owner Pleads Guilty to Taking $866,500 in COVID Relief, Employing Unauthorized Workers

An Auburn restaurant owner has pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud, money laundering and unlawful employment of aliens after admitting he fraudulently obtained pandemic relief money.

According to court documents and admissions made as part of the plea, Campos-Reyes applied for and received approximately $866,500 in May 2020 through the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program — CARES Act programs created to keep small businesses and their employees afloat during the COVID-19 shutdowns. Prosecutors say a portion of the money, about $262,145, went into real estate.

The case, prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama, also stems from restaurant enforcement actions in the region in 2025. Sentencing has not been scheduled.
