Ammonia Leak Closes Walmart Distribution Center on Andrews Road, Snarls Traffic Near I-85

August 3, 2026 โ€” Opelika, AL

A minor ammonia leak reported Monday afternoon at the Walmart distribution center at 2701 Andrews Road shut the facility down for several hours and backed traffic up across Opelika’s industrial district.

All employees were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported, according to WTVM. With no trucks allowed onto the property, tractor-trailers stacked up along Andrews Road, Northpark Drive and Interstate 85, and Opelika police urged drivers to avoid the area entirely or find an alternate route.

The Opelika Fire Department and the Lee County Emergency Management Agency were wrapping up the hazmat response by about 9:45 p.m., with the distribution center expected to reopen shortly afterward. Police assisted with traffic control to move waiting trucks back onto the site. CNAW 2 also reported on the closure and the resulting congestion.
