Not a lot on the City Council Agenda for regular business on Tuesday Night, but several things passed council vote with a 5-0 roll call all evening. City Streets started being resurfaced in Opelika today and their was a change to the initial bid that saved the city some money. In all about 2.5 Million goes to new paving in the city. East Alabama Paving got the contract . Special recognition to a few folks at the meeting. Jason Dunson was awarded the “Officer of the Month” distinction, which is voted on by other officers. In December our buddy Jason, also known at Butterbean caught a criminal that was about to rob a convience store. After catching the bad guy, a gun fell from the bad guys pocket. Nice Job Jason. And Opelika High School Football Coach Spence McCracken was recognized for his years of service. His birthday was yesterday, when he turned 60. Nice birthday present. Four more houses are on the demo list for the city. Two on Monroe Ave, one on South 4th and another on Chilton Avenue. And plans at the Sportsplex added a “Splash Park” at the cost of just under a half million dollars. That is money already in the budget that has been saved on the project so far, to allow this to be added back. Probably some new baseball fields and a maintenance shed will be included before the park is finished. I’ll have some artist drawings of the changes in a day or so. David Green at Robins & Morton will be sending that over in a day or so. I’ll also grab some pictures on the construction site. Finally, the Mayor made a pitch for folks to buy a book about the history of the Fire Department (pictured above). More on Edna’s nearly 500 page book in a coming post.

And make a note of the March meetings. The regular meeting onthe 3rd is a go, but the second has changed to the 24th!
