Alabama’s 2nd District Race Draws National Attention After Special Primaries

August 13, 2026 — Montgomery, AL

With special primaries settled, the contest in Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District between Democratic U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures and Republican nominee Rhett Marques, R-Enterprise, is drawing national attention as one of the races that could help determine control of Congress next year.

Marques won the Republican nomination in a winner-take-all special primary, defeating five other candidates. Turnout across Tuesday’s primaries was low, and analysts saw few surprises elsewhere on the ballot.
