Alabama Sets November Congressional Matchups After Low-Turnout Special Primary

MONTGOMERY — Aug. 12, 2026

Voters in Alabama’s 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th congressional districts went to the polls Tuesday in a special primary called by Gov. Kay Ivey after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the state to use the congressional map drawn by lawmakers in 2023, replacing the court-ordered map used in 2024.

Former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl won a four-candidate Republican primary in District 1 and will face Democratic nominee Clyde Jones, who was unopposed, in November. In District 2, state Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) took the Republican nomination with 50% of the vote in a six-candidate field and will challenge Democratic incumbent Rep. Shomari Figures, who was unopposed.

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer won the Republican nomination in District 6, defeating challenger Case Dixon. In District 7, Ammie Akin won the Republican nomination and will face eight-term Democratic incumbent Rep. Terri Sewell, who was also unopposed in her primary.

Turnout was low, as officials had predicted given the unusual timing: about 5.24% of eligible voters statewide, or roughly 113,493 people, according to BirminghamWatch.

Lee County sits in Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District, which was not among the districts voting Tuesday.
