Alabama PSC Data Center Review Hits Reply-Comment Deadline Aug. 21

MONTGOMERY — Aug. 12, 2026

The Alabama Public Service Commission’s review of how it evaluates electricity contracts between Alabama Power and large-load data center customers reaches its next deadline on Aug. 21, when reply comments are due.

The generic proceeding, Docket 33709, opened in July. Initial public comments closed Aug. 6; Alabama Power and other interested parties then have 15 days to respond. The commission has said it wants a new process in place by October.

The question matters locally as data center proposals spread across Alabama and communities weigh the effect on ratepayers. Alabama Power has said large-load customers, including data centers, are required to pay the full cost of serving their electric needs so costs are not shifted to existing customers.

Auburn’s City Council approved a one-year moratorium on data centers earlier this month, and the issue has become a live one in this year’s PSC elections.
