Alabama Insurance Board Recommends First Across-the-Board Premium Increase in 11 Years

MONTGOMERY — The State Employees’ Insurance Board executive committee voted Tuesday to recommend a $20 monthly premium increase across all benefit plans, along with benefit changes affecting more than 100,000 state employees, retirees and dependents.

If the full board signs off, it would be the first across-the-board increase in 11 years, SEIB CEO Stephanie Azar told Alabama Daily News. The recommendation comes as healthcare costs climb nationwide and Alabama’s General Fund revenue outlook stays flat or worse.

Alabama Political Reporter notes that state retirees have not received a cost-of-living adjustment to their benefit payments in two decades, making the proposed increase a straight cut to net income for many.

The proposal would take effect for the coming plan year if approved by the full board.
