Alabama GOP Adds Closed-Primary Plank to Party Platform

August 3, 2026 — Alabama

The Alabama Republican Party’s State Executive Committee voted unanimously Saturday to add a plank to the party platform supporting closed primaries and party registration, according to Yellowhammer News.

Closed primaries would restrict participation in a party’s primary to voters registered with that party — a change from Alabama’s current open system, where any voter may choose either party’s primary ballot. The plank is a statement of party position, not law; changing Alabama’s primaries would require action by the Legislature.

The move lands a week before the Aug. 11 special congressional primary. Alabama Democrats oppose the change.
