Alabama Awards First $144 Million in Rural Health Grants; 138 Projects Statewide

MONTGOMERY — Aug. 27, 2026

Gov. Kay Ivey announced Monday the first round of awards under the Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program: 138 grants totaling more than $144 million, spread across more than 80 unique healthcare and educational institutions and reaching projects in every county.

The money comes from the federal Rural Health Transformation Program created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which distributes $50 billion nationally and is aimed in part at offsetting Medicaid cuts.

Federal officials say the Alabama awards target mental health and substance abuse services, emergency and maternal care, and expansion of the healthcare workforce.
