Alabama ACA Enrollment Falls 23% After Enhanced Tax Credits Expire

MONTGOMERY — Aug. 20, 2026

Affordable Care Act marketplace enrollment in Alabama dropped by about 95,000 people — roughly 23% — after enhanced federal premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025, according to a late-July report from KFF cited by the Alabama Reflector.

The enhanced subsidies were passed by Congress in 2021 and were always intended to be temporary. Many of those who dropped coverage are now uninsured or paying for private plans. Alabama insurers have filed for a 20.7% average rate increase in the individual market for 2027.
