You may remember a few months ago, we had some pictures of a downtown Opelika Business and got comments from folks about that downtown Opelika Storre. Here was that post! Well, here’s this weeks project picture. I’ll have more about this before Monday, but wanted to get this up for you to check out!
Well, Henry had made the comment on Sunday afternoon to notice the parking meters. I had asked Redman about meter’s in Opelika, but he didn’t remember them. I thought this must be Railroad Avenue due to the drop from the sidewalk to the street. So checked it out later on Sunday to discover it’s actually one of my haunts these days. I’ll let Henry verify it, but check the detail and windows on the Easterday & Eighth and Rail buildings on South Railroad Avenue. Here’s the new and old in one view for you to compair!

Henry Stern passed this along: Lee James Clothing Store on Railroad Ave. was the “home” store of a small chain of Mens and Ladies Clothing Stores. Lee James was a pioneer in installment credit for clothing. Dukes Clothing Store opened on Railroad Ave. in 1946 and sold Men’s, Ladies and Childrens Clothing. Dukes Clothing Store was one of the first air conditioned businesses in Opelika. The business later moved to South 8th Street.
