July 3, 2026 — Opelika, Alabama
Opelika Parks and Recreation hosted the 73rd Annual Freedom Celebration on Friday, July 3, at the Opelika High School Track, presenting one of the area’s largest and most beloved Independence Day events. The free event drew the community together with patriotic entertainment, family activities, food vendors, and a spectacular fireworks display as part of the city’s America 250 observance.
Route 66 performed live music beginning at 7 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m. the Silver Wings Parachute Team from Fort Benning, Georgia, made a patriotic descent into the event carrying the American flag. Before the jump, children had the opportunity to write their names on paper plates placed on the baseball field; after landing, each skydiver selected a nearby plate to award a prize to the named child.
Food vendors included the Opelika Band Boosters serving hamburgers and hot dogs, along with food trucks offering barbecue, nachos, funnel cakes, ice cream, shaved ice, and other festival favorites. The evening concluded with a fireworks display starting around 9 p.m., set to patriotic music and sponsored by The Orthopedic Clinic. Parking was available at Opelika High School and Southern Union State Community College.
